What About Hoodia And Acai Berry For WeightLoss

September 21, 2010

These two ingredients are extremely popular right now in literally hundreds of different weight loss supplements. But do they really work? And are they actually safe to consume? We will look into these questions below starting with hoodia gordonii.

Hoodia Gordonii
Hoodia is a succulent (Cactus-like) plant that grows mostly in the deserts of Africa including Namibia, Botswana and Angola. It’s popularity has grown rapidly from the idea that it can drastically suppress the appetite. Many internet marketers claim that the Kalahari bushmen have used the hoodia plant for hundreds of years to suppress their hunger and thirst while on long hunting trips.

Despite all of the marketing hype surrounding hoodia, there have as yet been no published clinical trials done on humans to show that hoodia is effective for weight loss and safe to consume. Although most websites claim that hoodia has no side-effects, there were indications made by researchers at Pfizer that it may have undesired effects upon the liver due to other ingredients within the hoodia plant that are hard to remove.

Those who are taking medication or sufferers from diabetes are advised not to take hoodia supplements as they may interfere with medications in the liver and with the mechanism by which the brain regulates the blood sugar of the body.

Laboratory tests conducted by Alkemist Pharmaceuticals in Costa Mesa, CA, showed that approximately two-thirds of the tested supplements that were claimed to have hoodia gordonii within them contained no identifiable hoodia gordonii according to two plant authentication tests. This means that many consumers are being ripped off and are not even getting the proper product to begin with.
Acai Berry
Acai Berry is a type of berry that is harvested in the Brazilian rain forests from the Amazon Palm Tree. There are just as many claims about acai berry related to weight loss as there are for hoodia. But just like hoodia, there is, as yet, no scientific study to state that there are any weight loss properties in the berries.

Although the berries are filled with lots of minerals, vitamins and other important nutrients, just remember that there is no “magic pill” that is going to make your weight problems just vanish. The acai berry is just like any other fruit or berry. They are great to eat and are good for you, but berries alone will not shrink your body but may help with weight problems along with a balanced diet. You are led to believe that because they are exotic that they contain magical properties.

Consumers also need to be aware of the many deceptive acai berry promotions that are circulating the internet right now. They claim to offer you a free trial, however, in the fine print they usually state that you will be charged every month or two for more bottles on an auto-ship type program. Most people don’t realize they are going to be billed after their initial free trial as they use very deceptive marketing tactics.
